Study after study has proven that music education dramatically increases early brain development and improves students' overall academic performance.  The following is a sample of the research that is currently available:

Improves Reading and Math Performance
A research team studying first graders from two Rhode Island elementary schools found that students who participated in an "enriched, sequential, skill building music program" dramatically increased their reading and math performance.

Increases SAT Scores
Students with coursework/experience in music performance scored 55 points higher on the verbal portion of the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and 38 points higher on the math portion of the SAT than students with no coursework or experience in the arts for a combined total of 93 points higher.

Develops Quick and Decisive Thinking
During musical performance, children must constantly turn their thoughts into action.  Thought structures continually have to be updated and adjusted.  The combination of constant vigilance and forethought coupled with ever-changing physical responses is an educational experience of unique value.

Provides Important Experiences
Musical activities provide children with important experiences that can help them develop physical coordination, timing, memory, visual, aural and language skills.  When they work to increase their command of music and exercise musical skills in the company of others, they gain important experiences with self-paced learning, mental concentration and a heightened personal and social awareness.

Need More Help or Practice Time?
Come To Morning Band Practice!
(This is an optional opportunity for students and is not required)

Band students are invited to come to the BMMS band room any Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday morning between 7:45a.m. and 8:15a.m. to practice their instruments and/or get extra help!  I will be on breakfast duty on Wednesdays and unable to help as much; however, students are still welcome to come in to practice!  This practice time can be counted on their weekly practice reports, too!  When students arrive at school, they simply check in with their homeroom teacher and ask if they may come to the band room to practice!  Morning practice time is not required, it’s just an opportunity for some more individualized help for students who may be having some difficulty or who may only be in band class Thursdays and Fridays due to Solutions.  This extra practice time is especially helpful for beginning band students who are just getting started!  I encourage students to be patient with their progress and to feel free to ask for help when needed.  I will make every effort to encourage all students and help each of them achieve success!

(This is an optional opportunity for students and is not required)

In a continued effort and desire to help my students be successful, I am offering several OPTIONAL after school help clinics for any beginner students who may be having some difficulty or who may only be in band class Thursdays and Fridays due to Solutions.  This practice time can be counted on their weekly practice reports, too!  Students come to the band room after school on their regular bus tone and stay until 4:30PM.  Parents will need to provide transportation and may pick-up their child in the band room.  Like the optional Morning Practice Time sessions, this extra time is especially helpful for beginning band students who are just getting started!  I encourage students to be patient with their progress and to feel free to ask for help when needed.  It takes time for students to become comfortable with their instruments, so students should not give up!  All it takes is patience and practice!  I will make every effort to encourage all students and help each of them achieve success!
